Rambam's (Maimonides) Diet for Today

Is the Rambam's diet relevant today, 800 years after being written? Should we be practicing the health regimen set forth by him? The answer to both of these questions is a resounding, YES!
Rambam (Maimonides) practiced and taught a system of medicine that is called Unani medicine, he even contributed 10 important medical works to this field. Unani is the Arabic name of Greek medicine (in Arabic, unani=greece) that is practiced in the muslim lands. It has been continuously practiced since 980 AD in the middle east and central Asia. In fact, today, Unani medicine is one of the recognized medical systems of India. It is widely practiced throughout India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and many other arab countries. This means that a large percentage of the worlds population practice a direct derivative of the Rambam's medicine!
Unani medicine is closely related to two other famous traditional medical systems; Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. All three of these systems share many characteristics, and similarities with each other. Unani, while based on Greek medicine borrowed many concepts from it’s Indian and Chinese cousins. Ayurveda and Chinese medicine combined form the primary health care system of Asia. Chinese medicine is even incorporated into the mainstream medical system in various European countries and in parts of the United States. The European naturopathic and herbal system is directly based on Greco-Unani medicine.
From this we can see that Rambam’s medical and dietary advice is still relevant today many years after being written. And just like the other traditional medical systems have been incorporated, far from the middle east and Asia, into the colder climates of Europe and America, so to is the Rambam’s system relevant to all climates and countries. Below is a comparison chart between Unani, Chinese medicine and Greek medicine. Western medicine has been included as a reference point.
