Jewish Healing Prayer or Energy Healing

By: Ya'akov Gerlitz, Dipl.Ac & C.H.

Prayer heals. When a Jew is happy, sad, afraid,or victorious he prays. Much of our day is dictated by prayer. Nearly every event is begun with a prayer. So, why should healing be any different? Why should it be that Jews who practice "energy" healing not also utilize this timeless method of interacting with the Divine to promote healing?

Why should Jewish practitioners of energetic healing direct their energy into another person. Do we have the ability to heal? Of course not. All healing comes from Hashem. We may only act as His messenger. This is a fundamental Jewish belief.

The preferred method for utilizing energetic healing should be through the medium of prayer. This will not only produce better results; it is safer for both the patient and the healer. Why? Because from the patients' perspective there is no chance of becoming contaminated with the healer's potentially negative or unclean energy. Contaminated? How? By projecting healing energy into another person the healer also projects part of himself, the ruach level of his soul into the other person. This happens despite his best intentions, even if he is unknowingly harboring this negativity or "baggage." Do we know who the healer is? What is his philosophy? What is his belief system? These things get projected into the person being healed. It seems prudent to be very careful of who a person allows to heal them. Healing through a form of prayer bypasses this potential problem. The healer is no more than a messenger, beseeching Hashem, the source of all healing, to perform His wonders.

There are advantages for the healer also. Many forms of energy healing require that the healer project their "energy" into the patient. There is a very real issue of becoming depleted from this kind of work. Even if the healer is just a "channel," many times it ends up that they are in fact using up their own vital energy.

In contrast, by performing energy healing through prayer, you become energized yourself rather than becoming depleted. Not only do you become energized and receive your own healing energy, you also, by the merit of being Hashem's messenger, receive a Divine influx to help you help your patient. This Divine influx may take the form as an answer, an insight or the ability to be able to heal the person in front of you.

When we engage in prayer we have the confidence knowing that Hashem is with us and that we're not alone, having to rely on our own failable intelligence. Most healers would love to be in the presence of a trusted mentor. There is an empowerment knowing that there is another, more experience practitioner you can consult with, especially when confronted with a difficult situation. What could be better than being in the presence of Hashem?

G-d helps those who help others. This is a fundamental aspect of Jewish prayer. Jews do not pray for themselves, we pray for Ourselves, in the collective sense. When a Jew is ill, G-d forbid, Jews do not send him "healing energy." We recite Psalms, we say a mishabarach, in short we beseech Hashem to send a refuah (healing) to the person in need. So, why should a one-on-one healing session be any different. Just because the person in in front of you does not mean you need to project your energy into him. Pray. It works every time. Even if you do not see the results right away, be sure that they have had a positive effect. As the Baal Shem Tov taught, "when you pray know that immediately it has been answered." This is also the best way to ensure that the prayer will be answered.
